As an Environmental Educator, you’ll engage students from preschool to high school in hands-on marine science learning, both outdoors and in the lab. With a focus on Long Island Sound, you’ll teach topics like marine biology, climate science, and ecology, while helping maintain educational equipment and aquariums. Summary
Founded in 1989, SoundWaters works towards a sustainable environment where people share a passion for Long Island Sound, students succeed and our community thrives. We enrich our community and protect our environment through teaching, training, sailing and study on Long Island Sound.
Annually SoundWaters offers marine science programs for over 30,000 students, aboard our Schooner, at our Coastal Education Center and on and along the coast. We provide high level study opportunities, aboard our RV and in our labs, to give local high school students a path towards college success. We provide stewardship programs where the local environment is a springboard for personal growth and, finally, we offer a range of public programs and experiences to develop sustainable practices and engage the wider community in our region’s greatest natural resource: Long Island Sound.
SoundWaters Environmental Educators are responsible for delivery of science programs for students ranging from preschool through high school. Educators deliver information using an interactive pedagogy in the field and in a lab setting. Subject matter includes marine biology, climate science, and ecology, with an emphasis on Long Island Sound.
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Implement an effective educational experience for school groups ranging from preschool to high school, outdoors and indoors.
- Deliver instructional content clearly and in a manner understandable to a diverse audience of learners.
- Preparing and maintaining educational equipment.
- Maintain aquarium systems and the creatures that dwell in them.
- Support organizational special events.
- Adhere to all SoundWaters policies and procedures.
- Serve as a positive role model to students.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, science, or related field or equivalent experience.
- Able to teach and manage groups of up to 30 students.
- Able to be flexible and adaptable in a dynamic work environment.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Able to manage time well.
- Exemplary communication skills.
- Comfortable working outside in all weather.
- Comfortable working with and handling marine species.
- Must possess valid Driver’s License.
- Others Duties as Assigned.
SALARY: $42,000 including generous benefits package.
