The NSCNA is seeking a creative and energetic educator to assist our Director of Educational Programming with the development and implementation of our environmental education programs. With plenty of flexibility and room for creativity, this is the perfect position for an enthusiastic educator to challenge themselves and engage in informal, personal programming with our community.

Nestled in the scenic Susquehanna Valley of Central Pennsylvania, the Ned Smith Center for Nature and Art is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that serves as a leading institution in the region for environmental education, outdoor activities, and artistic exhibitions and performances. The Center also plays an active role in education about nature, art, and conservation through a year-long series of workshops, guided walks, lectures, and other special events. As a repository for the art, writings, and other work of renowned Pennsylvania wildlife artist Ned Smith, we take our inspiration from his life, work, and interests. Our mission is to honor the legacy of Ned Smith by merging the arts and natural world through education, exhibition, and experiences. We hope all who visit our facility or lands experience the Center as a vibrant cornerstone of the cultural, economic, social, and environmental life of our community. POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Ned Smith Center seeks a creative and energetic educator to assist our Director of Educational Programming with the development and implementation of educational and public outreach nature and arts programs and events, including summer camps, workshops, and community events. Center Educators take a leading role in maintaining public access and enjoyment of the Center’s lands and facilities by greeting visitors and answering questions, consulting on lands and trails maintenance, leading guided hikes, and providing resources and expertise, as requested. Center educational programs serve students in grades PreK - 12 on and off site. Center hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM, although some weekend and evening hours are required to accommodate special programs and events.

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in education, wildlife, biology, environmental science, fine arts, or a related field
  • Knowledge and experience related to the natural sciences, especially animal and plant species native to Pennsylvania
  • Knowledge and experience with the arts or a willingness to learn about varied art forms
  • Familiarity with educational program development, effective teaching strategies, and state standards, especially in the fields of environmental education and arts education, and the ability to lead day-long educational activities
  • The ability and willingness to work cooperatively with a small staff

This position also requires a valid driver’s license, AED/First Aid/CPR certifications, and satisfactory background checks and clearances as well as familiarity with Microsoft and Google suite programs.

 

Compensation Information

$40-48,000/year; commensurate with experience
