Zoo Educator Part-Time

The Little Rock Zoo and the City of Little Rock is seeking a qualified individual to fill the position of Zoo Educator.  This position includes on-site and off-site programs as well as guest engagement and camps.  The Zoo has received additional funding to make improvements and this is a great time to join the Zoo prior to the centennial celebration in 2024.

Job Objective and Essential Job Functions

To provide or assist in the instruction and supervision of participants in on-site and education zoo reach programs and activities for the Little Rock Zoo.

  1. Develops and assists in creating zoo education programs.
  2. Develops activities related to outdoor, environmental, animal and conservation education.
  3. Teaches or assists in teaching, monitors and supervises various zoo education programs and activities for youth and/or adult participants.
  4. Prepares equipment and supplies for delivery of zoo education programs.
  5. Handles a wide variety of animal ambassadors for shows, presentations and programs.
  6. Supervises program participants to ensure that zoo rules, city ordinances and other policies, procedures, and laws are obeyed.
  7. Administers minor discipline, following zoo and City policies, to program participants as required.
  8. Monitors equipment and supply inventory, including condition, to ensure equipment and supplies required are available to conduct zoo programs and activities.
  9. Collects information and maintains records on all programs; prepares narrative and statistical reports.
  10. Assists in the development, administering, compiling and analysis of program evaluations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of kindergarten through twelfth grade (K-12) level training, teaching, and presentation techniques and methods.
  • Knowledge of life sciences, exotic animal species, and conservation/environmental science.
  • Skill in the operation of a computer utilizing database, spreadsheet, and word processing software.
  • Ability to develop, deliver and evaluate conservation/environmental education programs, classes, tours and activities that inform the public about the Zoo and its conservation efforts.
  • Ability to conduct research and analyze and compile data.
  • Ability to develop and deliver conservation/environmental education programs to diverse public audiences, various social and economic backgrounds, small and large groups of individuals, various age groups, ethnicities, and knowledge-levels.

Experience Required

These knowledge, skills, and abilities are usually, although not always, acquired through completion of a Bachelors Degree in Education or a related area; one (1) year experience in training, teaching or conducting presentations in a zoological setting. Equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.

Compensation Information

$13 Hourly / $27,040.00 Annually
