In collaboration with the Youth Leadership Development Coordinator of Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium this position assists in the program development, training, mentoring, capacity building, and evaluation of conservation-based youth leadership development programs. This position is new to the Conservation Engagement Department and exists to support current programming and build capacity for future conservation programing based on this team’s collaboration.

Summary

           ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Assist in program development, interviewing, onboarding, training, mentoring and evaluation of youth ranging in age from 14 years to 18 years. 
  • Consistently facilitate opportunities for growth with youth participants
  • Demonstrate interest in supporting individual youth’s differentiated needs 
  • Schedule and co-supervise 75 -100 youth in settings such as meetings, interviews, trainings, active volunteering, shuttles, and off-site educational experiences. 
  • Collaborate daily with all Conservation Engagement staff to ensure seamless operations in our work area.
  • Efficiently navigate various logistical levels in a fast-paced environment while mentoring youth through the process.
  • Promote and model an equitable and inclusive atmosphere within the youth leadership development program which recognizes the value and contributions of youth of all backgrounds and identities.
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Engagement Specialist for maintenance of volunteer and education databases, and basic administrative and clerical duties.  
  • Ensure the safety and wellbeing of youth under supervision.
  • Set and hold boundaries with youth participants.
Care has been taken to give applicants a full and realistic view of this position; a small portion of this job will be within other duties as assigned.  When engaging in other duties as assigned all tasks will be directly related to the specialist position and the interdependence of the greater Conservation Engagement team that this position exists within.
 
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Demonstrated commitment and applied use of Justice, Equity, Diversity, Accessibility, and Inclusion best practices.
  • Minimum of two years increasingly responsible experience facilitating and/or coordinating teenage youth.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, natural sciences, environmental studies, museum studies or related field. Four or more years of related experience may substitute for the degree requirement.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • Must be flexible, detailed oriented, and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Must be able to work weekends, evenings and holidays as assigned.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Must have the desire to work with large groups of zoo visitors in a conservation education facility.

Compensation Information
