YEMs work with the volunteer engagement team to implement the Youth Ocean Advocates volunteer program for high school–age youth in a manner that’s both beneficial to the youth participating in the program and to the Aquarium’s mission. This position is responsible for the implementation of various program activities, including virtual marine science club (MSC) meetings, leading and supporting youth volunteers through such activities as youth interpretation shifts, and off-site program events like field conservation activities and field trips. YEMs will be active participants in our ongoing work to improve the program, particularly our focus on developing a program that is welcoming to all youth and respectful and appreciative of our community’s diversity.
The Aquarium was recently awarded a grant to host MSC, entering its second year. MSC is a drop-in club for high school youth who are interested in science. The club will meet weekly between June 2022 and March 2023. Weekly meetings will be virtual and there will be occasional opportunities for on-site experiences, field trips and conservation events. MSC positions are grant funded, term limited through March 2023 and may be extended based upon the program’s outcomes and ongoing funding. Two of the YEMs will support this effort.
