Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge is seeking three paid, full-time, yearlong internship opportunities for 2026-2027, including a Youth Engagement Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Biological Technician. These internships are available through the Student Conservation Association.

Summary

Join the Deer Flat National Wildlife Refuge team as we work to become a trusted community asset, reflective of the entire community, that is collaborative in pursuit of our conservation mission. 

The Youth Engagement Coordinator will work with community partners to co-design education programs, develop and lead new programs that strengthen the voices of youth in conservation, and ensure that programs are relevant to various communities. For more information, see position description

The Volunteer Coordinator will work with Refuge staff, volunteers, and partners to improve and expand Refuge volunteer programs, including ensuring that refuge volunteer programs are inclusive and accessible to various communities. For more information, see position description

The Biological Technician will assist the Urban Refuge Biologist with a variety of projects, including vegetation surveys, bird surveys conducted by boat, manual and chemical treatments for invasive species, and data entry. They will also work closely with other staff to support outreach activities and urban programming. This collaboration may include participating in public events, leading bird walks, and helping to develop and present refuge programs. For more information, see position description

Compensation Information

  • ~1,100 to/from travel allowance (paid one-time)
  • ~$600 weekly living allowance (paid bi-weekly)
  • ~$1,000 Duty-Related Travel Reimbursement (receipts required)
  • Health insurance (optional)

All allowances are subject to applicable federal, state, and local taxes.
