Summary

Are you an outgoing, data-driven person with a passion for helping people learn the skills they need to enjoy outdoor activities like hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing? If so, the wildlife event program specialist position in our Salt Lake office might be your dream job.

The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources is looking for a talented, people-oriented professional to lead the statewide events program. The program’s main focus is to increase participation in fishing, hunting, shooting sports and wildlife viewing through seminars, clinics and other activities. These activities include opportunities for skills-based training and experiential learning. The person in this position will provide direction and support to regional staff and will help coordinate and promote events on a statewide level. This program leader is also responsible for displays and activities at the Utah State Fair Wildlife Building and other large events and expos. Note: Preference will be given to applicants with a bachelor's degree or higher in communication, marketing, sociology, anthropology, natural resource management, outdoor recreation, conservation education or a closely related field.

Principal duties

As a wildlife event program specialist, you will:

  • Lead the DWR’s statewide Wildlife Recreation Events Program, which focuses on increasing participation in hunting, fishing, shooting sports and wildlife viewing.
  • Coordinate with regional staff to ensure the events hosted by DWR represent diverse opportunities for the public to learn about wildlife, build support for wildlife management and create a healthy conservation ethic.
  • Coordinate the DWR’s building exhibit for the Utah State Fair.
  • Ensure that the DWR’s Angler Education Program is structured to achieve scalable, sustainable success.
  • Collaborate across administrative section lines and regional boundaries to engage the public to help support the agency’s goals and objectives.
  • Develop and grow relationships with stakeholders in agencies and other organizations — and with industry representatives — to promote sustainable wildlife-related recreation programs.

The ideal candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Superior verbal and written communication skills — you must be articulate, engaging and adept at sharing information and ideas clearly and concisely.
  • Strong interpersonal communication abilities that help build trust and positive relationships.
  • Creative, pragmatic ways to solve problems and improve processes.
  • An understanding and appreciation of the history and traditions associated with hunting, fishing and shooting sports, and recognition of how those activities support wildlife conservation in the state.
  • Experience developing, evaluating and improving educational events and programs.
  • Working knowledge of Eventbrite, SurveyMonkey or similar tools.
  • A bachelor's degree or higher in communication, marketing, sociology, anthropology, natural resource management, outdoor recreation, conservation education or a closely related field.
  • Experience with building educational displays.
