The Taylor Creek Visitor Center is a USDA Forest Service hub, serving roughly 300,000 visitors to the Lake Tahoe region. Volunteers are important stewards of the site, providing regional tourist information, natural and human history, trail and maintenance work, as well as interpretative programs to diverse groups. A small retail shop is also located on site and special events are hosted throughout the summer. The visitor center is open from Memorial Day week to the end of October.

Summary

In cooperation with the USDA Forest Service, Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), the Great Basin Institute is recruiting volunteers for service at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center. Volunteers may be Tahoe locals, or those residing out-of-town with RV access. Campsites are reserved at the nearby volunteer campground for the visitor center volunteer(s), provided at no cost to volunteers.

Currently, locals may provide service from May through October, with a negotiable work schedule. The RV volunteer positions are available for a two-month service agreement (May-June; August-Sept.), with the option to extend into October. October is a very exciting time at Taylor Creek, as thousands of Kokanee salmon return to their birthplace to spawn each year. Hosted through a multi-organization partnership, the Fall Fish Festival is an annual on-site event with heavy visitation. Volunteer service during this busy time is especially welcomed.

Taylor Creek Visitor Center volunteer duties include:

  • Answering walk-up visitors' questions
  • Community outreach
  • Trail roving
  • Dispensing free information (maps, guides)
  • Facility maintenance
  • Tabling events
  • Interpretative program assistance
  • Gift shop operations
  • Sign creation and posting
  • Maintaining and setting-up displays

The visitor center will be open Thursday to Sunday, from 9am to 4pm. Volunteers work varied schedules, however RV volunteers are expected to work weekend shifts and must commit to 21 hours/week. No compensation is included, however volunteer rewards may be provided based on hours of service.
