Seasonal naturalist for summer camp specializing in place-based education in natural history and environmental studies in the mountains of western Virginia.

Summary

Nature Camp seeks applicants for the position of seasonal, resident naturalist for the first half of the summer of 2024.

The Tess Majors Endowed Naturalist will support and enhance the educational program at Nature Camp through teaching, training, and guidance to the summer staff and youth campers. The ideal candidate will demonstrate broad familiarity with and knowledge of the natural history and biota of the central Appalachians; proficiency in teaching in non-formal, outdoor settings; and interest in working with youth and young adult staff. This seasonal naturalist will assist instructors in planning classes; developing hands-on, place-based educational activities; and refining their pedagogical skills.  The Tess Majors Endowed Naturalist will also be expected to help lead nature walks and to present one or more evening programs during summer youth sessions.  The position requires residence at Nature Camp for five weeks during the summer (corresponding to a week of staff training and preparation and sessions for youth in grades 10-12 and 8-9).
