Description

For nearly 25 years, Herring Gut Coastal Science Center has been the St. George Peninsula and the midcoast of Maine’s source for marine science education and exploration. Our mission of educating students and communities about the connections between the ocean, inland waters, and economy of Maine reaches over 10,000 visitors every year.

As a part of a dynamic team, you will assist with educating the community of year-round and seasonal visitors on the importance of becoming future stewards of our natural and cultural resources. For additional information on Herring Gut Coastal Science Center please visit www.herringgut.org

In this role you will:

  • Prepare for and teach environmental education classes to groups and individuals of all ages.
  • Learn how to properly handle and care for marine animals and plants in order to present during programming.
  • Guide and mentor participants in summer camps and offsite outreach programs throughout the region. This may include tidepool treks, science sails, island explorations, and marine touch tanks.
  • Assist in maintaining education/office/building organization while using site, buildings, and materials. Including aquaponics, aquaculture, greenhouse operations and saltwater aquariums
  • Other activities necessary to advance the mission of Herring Gut Coastal Science Center.

To be successful you will need:

  • Education or life experience related to one or more of the following topics:  marine science, outdoor activities, environmental science, biology, natural resources, education, and/or conservation. Preferred enrollment in an accredited college or university.
  • Ability to work with individuals of all ages and abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Show compassion, empathy and patience while maintaining an unwavering sense of humor.
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends.
  • Tolerance of inclement weather conditions.
  • Excellent people skills and a professional demeanor.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to traverse uneven surfaces.
  • Be a US Citizen
  • Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • Must possess or be willing to obtain: current CPR and First Aid; Lifeguard certification preferred.
  • Maine State Background check required for working with children.

Compensation:  $17/hour for a 40-hour week, uniform, training, possible housing
