Nestled in the heart of Appalachia, Experience Learning is a 400-acre high preserve located just below the base of the highest mountain in West Virginia – Spruce Knob. Here is where your summer adventure begins! Our Mountain Stewards Summer Camp is a 6-day, expedition-style program focused on stewardship, leadership, and adventure for all experience levels.

Experience Learning is looking for outdoor professionals who have a passion for the outdoors, and who want to share their experiences and time with campers aged 7-18. If you are looking to connect with nature and people, and are wanting to immerse yourself in the wild and wonderful, then Experience Learning is the place for you!

Our ideal candidate will be able to:

  • Supervise campers and maintain a physically and emotionally safe environment for all campers and guests
  • Prepare and deliver hands-on experiential and inquiry-based programs in a remote outdoor setting for overnight camps
  • Lead campers on four-six-day backpacking trips in varying weather conditions and on uneven terrain while carrying a heavy pack (often between 40-55 pounds)
  • Lead campers on six-day canoe trips
  • Lead dorm based adventures
  • Engage in and lead activities such as hiking, caving, canoeing, rock climbing, orienteering, outdoor cooking, camp craft, wilderness survival, and natural science lessons
  • Facilitate discussions and initiatives around leadership, communication, diversity, environmental stewardship, team work, and creative problem solving
  • Implement and model excellent risk management strategies and administer first aid as needed
  • Prepare and cook meals for guests and campers

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent life experience
  • Wilderness First Aid and CPR – Required or ability to acquire before the position begins
  • COVID vaccination required (+booster if six months since last shot)
  • Positive attitude, determination, and unassailable work ethic
  • Desire to teach and work outdoors with young people from varying social and economic backgrounds
  • Effective communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Curiosity about the natural world and a willingness to learn natural science lessons
  • Desire to live in a remote setting with an outstanding community of outdoor professionals and to work hard to make a positive change in our world

Benefits:

  • Daily compensation rate: $65.00-$105 a day based on the merit-based scale. On average our instructors begin at $75-$80/day
