The Yale Peabody Museum is seeking a full-time, temporary (May-August) Summer Camp Assistant Director to help plan and administer a natural history camp for middle school aged campers interested in science, nature, and arts!

Accountable To:    Camp Director

General Function: Lead Summer Camp registration and administration; support Summer Camp curriculum development; co-create and co-lead Summer Camp staff training; act as alternate camp director, as needed; run program activities, as needed.

The Assistant Summer Camp Director will take a lead role in summer camp registration and administration before and during the program. They will support development of camp curriculum, pedagogy, and philosophy. The Assistant Director will work with the Camp Director to plan and run camp staff training. They will teach and lead activities as needed and/or based on interest. They will cultivate and ensure a positive environment that promotes and enhances learning in museum and outdoor settings.

Essential Duties

Administration of Programs

  • Take the lead role in Summer Camp registration and administration utilizing Camp Docs to manage camper information and health form intake
  • Support parent communication before and during program
  • Support scheduling, coordination, and delivery of program activities including off-site filed trips
  • Act as Director of First Aid and coordinate medication intake and administration in collaboration with Camp Director
  • Support development and implementation of COVID-safe camp protocols and procedures

Curriculum Design & Training

  • Support Camp Director with curriculum design and lesson planning with a focus on experiential, science, arts, and/or humanities-focused inquiry and learning
  • Work with Camp Director to plan and run staff training
  • Plan and coordinate off-site field trips and field work experiences
  • Support and co-lead regular staff meetings

Teaching

  • Coordinate and lead Extended Day programming
  • Teach or participate in activities or lessons as needed based on availability and necessary coverage
  • Support and attend all field trips

Program Culture

  • Demonstrate leadership in creating a positive, safe, and welcoming program environment for all youth and staff
  • Ensure that the summer program guidelines and procedures are adhered to- with the highest priority of ensuring physical and emotional safety of all participants
  • Provide guidance and act as a role model to staff, volunteers and campers in using proactive and positive behavior management strategies and techniques
  • Ensure facilities and equipment are maintained and kept in acceptable, safe condition

Qualifications

  • Experience working in a camp environment, with supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with young people and adults from diverse communities and cultures.
  • Experience managing camp administration including registration, parent communication, health record administration as well as managing program logistics. Experience with Camp Docs is helpful but not a requirement.
  • Experience developing and leading engaging, hands-on learning experiences for children, particularly science and nature-based lessons and activities geared towards middle school-aged learners.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, flexibility, and a sense of humor!
  • Degree (or pursuing a degree) in Education, Social Work, Child Development, Sciences, Environmental Humanities or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team; being punctual, reliable, and responsible.
  • Passion for working with children; enthusiasm for working in a natural history setting.

Requirements

  • Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association First Aid and CPR certification – we will provide this training and certification in advance of camp start date for those who do not have it
  • Current physical exam
  • Must be available for duration of camp staff training and camp sessions: June 27th- August 12th
  • This is a full-time, temporary position without benefits scheduled to start in early May with some flexibility on start date

 

Compensation

$23.30/hour
