This position assists the Education Director with NRNC’s summer camps, which aims to provide youth with a lasting, positive connection to the Nisqually Estuary. The Summer Camp Assistant helps ensure the safety of camp participants and increases their understanding of the Nisqually Estuary using inquiry-based science activities.

Summary

This position assists the Education Director with NRNC’s summer camps, which aims to provide youth with a lasting, positive connection to the Nisqually Estuary. The Summer Camp Assistant helps ensure the safety of camp participants and increases their understanding of the Nisqually Estuary using inquiry-based science activities.

Assist in leading summer day camps:

  • Work cooperatively with adult volunteer counselors and Education Director to ensure safety of all participants, including monitoring and enforcing COVID-19 protocols (masks, sanitizing, etc.) within the camp program
  • Lead games, crafts, educational activities, and engaging lessons in biology, ecology, and marine biology for camp participants in 2nd-7th grade
  • Assist Education Director in managing camper behavior with patience and kind firmness, in an indoor classroom setting and outdoors on Luhr Beach
  • Participate in the camper check-in/out process
  • Maintain and clean program equipment and ensure nature center is orderly
  • Assist with the overall maintenance, cleaning, disinfection, and storage of program materials and equipment and indoor and outdoor learning spaces.
  • Trade off lunch breaks with Education Director
  • Exhibit consistent professional characteristics such as a positive attitude, timeliness, initiative, emotional maturity, and self-responsibility.

Assist with preparing for summer camps and clean up:

  • Assisting Education Director with planning curriculum/schedules for each camp session 
  • Creating and printing activity handouts for participants 
  • Organizing and cleaning up craft supplies
  • Cleaning and maintaining science equipment
  • Communicating with parents and guardians 
  • Shopping for summer camp materials as needed

Wage: $15.75 per hour

Work Schedule:

  • Part-time, Temporary/Seasonal, 170 hours in June-August
  • At least June 18-August 11 plus negotiable prep/cleanup days throughout the summer.
  • Must be available to work all summer camp days as outlined below and other days for prep work and training (coordinated with the Education Director). Availability for the entire week when camps are in session is highly preferred.

Camp Dates:

June 28-30

July 12-14

July 26-28

August 9-11

 

Camp days are 8 hour work days plus a 30-minute unpaid lunch break. The day camp program is 9:00-4:00 with before-care 8:00-9:00 am and after-care 4:00-5:00 pm.

There is a teen Science Adventure Camp August 1-5 which includes a 3-night overnight camping trip. The working hours for this week are negotiable.
