Mill River Park Collaborative provides the leadership and resources for the creation and maintenance of Mill River Park in downtown Stamford, Connecticut. The Collaborative is a public/private partnership of government, corporate, and community interests committed to building an inviting and exciting park and greenway and ensuring its enduring success.
Mill River Stewards is a year-round program for Stamford high school students. Through paid field-based internships, teens learn about urban park stewardship, environmental conservation, community sustainability, and associated careers. Research shows that classroom learning combined with paid internships for students of all socioeconomic backgrounds increases young people’s awareness of career opportunities and motivates them to pursue higher education.
Job Description:
The Steward Internship Supervisor position is a part-time, hourly position up to 35 hours/week during the summer with occasional night and weekend hours, and reports to the Director of Education & Sustainability. This position will oversee and facilitate the Mill River Stewards high school internship program and occasionally supervise other interns not associated with the program. This position will have two assistants (former Stewards) to help facilitate daily activities during the summer.
From May 16th through August 19th, the position will run Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm each day. The expectation is that you would try to avoid extended time off during this period. Starting pay is between $20-23 per hour, depending on the qualifications/experience.
When there are fewer hours for this role during the school year, there will be the opportunity to pick up hours teaching school groups or helping with other programs and projects.
We are looking to fill this position ASAP, and applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
Responsibilities:
- Leading high school students in stewardship activities such as invasive plant removal, lawn, and meadow care, planting and transplanting perennials, litter removal, etc
- Teach environmental education lessons focused on positive climate action
- Work collaboratively with Mill River Park full-time staff to engage Stewards in ongoing conversation management projects
- Help Stewards develop career materials such as resumes and cover letters
- Chaperone off-site field trips
- Assist with field or office work as it pertains to the program
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies or a related field
- 2+ years of experience in education, programs, or similar professional experience
- The ability and desire to work outdoors on your feet for 6+ hours a day and ability to lift 50lbs
- Experience using hand tools and basic field science equipment
- A passion for environmental stewardship and working with youth is paramount. A high-energy level, organizational skills, teamwork, and the ability to communicate effectively are crucial!
Added Consideration will be given to those with the following qualifications:
- Bi/multi-lingual
- Experience, course work, or strong interest in engineering, physics, chemistry, or sustainability
