Summary
Engage with teachers, students and landowners about the New York City drinking water watershed, water supply system, and the critical role that healthy, well-managed forests play in filtering and protecting drinking water for over 9 million New Yorkers. Help plan, lead and evaluate an exhilarating 5-day teacher's institute that immerses educators in the ecology, engineering and history of the NYC Watershed and water supply system. Support forest landowner outreach and education efforts to empower people to enjoy, steward, and protect their woodlands.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Watershed Forestry Educator will have the following duties and responsibilities:
•Work in cooperation with the East of Hudson Forestry Coordinator and Watershed Forest Stewardship Educator to support teacher training programs related to the NYC Watershed, drinking water supply system and watershed forestry. In particular, assist with planning, running and evaluating the Watershed Forestry Institute for Teachers, which is a 5-day, 4 night training program for 30 teachers (4-8th grade) held at an environmental education center.
•Work in cooperation with WAC Forestry Program staff to assist with forest landowner outreach and education efforts in the NYC Watershed region, including marketing and content development for MyWoodlot.com, a website designed to promote forest stewardship among woodland owners. •Work in cooperation with WAC Watershed Forest Stewardship Educator to assist with landowner site visits relating to the implementation of various forest management practices and tree planting projects.
SKILLS DESIRED
•College degree or working towards a degree in an environmental and/ or education field;
•Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills;
•Knowledge of and experience with environmental education, experiential learning, event planning, and program evaluation;
•General computer skills, including Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint; •Preference will be given to candidates with forestry and/or water-related environmental education experience; •Conditions of employment are proof of COVID19 vaccination, a valid driver’s license and a dependable vehicle for which WAC will reimburse mileage incurred on the job based on current federal rates.
REPORTING RESPONSIBILITY:
•Position located at WAC’s East of Hudson office at Hilltop Hanover Farm, 1275 Hanover St., Yorktown Heights, NY 10598. •Duration approximately 8 weeks with a start date in mid/late June. •Works under direct supervision of the WAC East of Hudson Forestry Coordinator and the WAC Forestry Program Manager. Report bi-monthly to the Watershed Forestry Program Committee of the Watershed Agricultural Council.
Compensation Information
COMPENSATION:
•$16.00/hour, 40hours/week for 8 weeks, plus mileage reimbursement. Housing NOT included.
