Summary
Come work this summer as a Naturalist on beautiful Kiawah Island, South Carolina.
A naturalist at Kiawah Island Golf Resort will offer guests and residents a unique opportunity to explore Kiawah Island’s natural beauty and to learn about the flora and fauna on the island through classroom presentations, interpretative walks, biking tours, van trips, kayak excursions, and stand-up paddleboard tours. The goal of the naturalist is to generate interest, expand knowledge, and to convey the importance of barrier island ecosystems to all participants in the program. A naturalist will assist in the day-to-day care of the animals inside the nature center. This also includes assisting in the daily maintenance of the Nature Center’s appearance. Animal rescues and possible rehab of animals will take place when necessary. This position is seasonal and will ideally begin by mid-May (potentially earlier) but start/end dates can be flexible.
Compensation:
$10/hour plus gratuities
Responsibilities & Skills:
- A naturalist must have the ability to identify the vegetation and wildlife native to Kiawah Island and educate guests as to their importance within barrier island ecosystems and beyond.
- To effectively and efficiently deliver oral interpretation of the biological processes as they occur on a barrier island.
- To lead safe and enjoyable tours when conducted on kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, van trips, biking tours, interpretative walks, or in a classroom setting.
- Answer ALL questions and promote the activities and events of the Nature Program and Recreation Department with unrivaled standards of customer service.
- Upholds the core values and policies & procedures of the resort.
- All other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- A college degree (or seeking) in biology or a related science discipline
- CPR (current) certification preferred
- Nature guide/eco-tourism experience and a passion for the outdoors
- Must be able to teach guests of all ages and all backgrounds; this includes young children
- Strong oral communication skills with the ability to talk to large groups
- Strong interpretive skills as they pertain to local barrier island plants and wildlife
- Must be able to work well with others in a team environment
- Anticipate the needs of everyone around you all of the time
- Flexible schedule – working on weekends and holidays
- Must work both independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent communication skills in English both verbal and written
- Must be able to pass a background check.
Essential Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to lift a minimum weight of 50 pounds
- Capable of working consecutive hours without sitting down
