We are currently seeking a Seasonal Educator to help facilitate education programs for Trailblazers Brooklyn Bridge Park campers with guidance of an experienced co-teacher. Camp groups are grades K-5 and are grouped by age. This position is estimated to be 28 hours/week, with a start date of June 20th. Resumes will be reviewed on a rolling basis, until the position is filled. Preference will be given to those who are available to work occasional weekends.

Our free and low-cost events create new and exciting opportunities for tens of thousands of NYC residents and visitors to learn, grow, and experience all that Brooklyn Bridge Park has to offer.

The Conservancy’s Education Program is dedicated to teaching people of all ages and backgrounds about Brooklyn Bridge Park’s unique built and natural environment. We aim to create diverse and experiential programming that will inspire stewardship and life-long learning. In our school and camp programs, we use the park as a laboratory for hands-on investigation and incorporate inquiry-based and experiential learning into STEAM lessons that focus on the park’s ecology, history and design.

SEASONAL EDUCATOR DESCRIPTION:

  • Responsible for co-teaching summer outdoor environmental education classes in Brooklyn Bridge Park. Class topics include marine science, ecology, geology, sustainability, and history of the Brooklyn Bridge 
  • Work with fellow educators to plan and refine curriculum for camp programs 
  • Work with fellow educators to prep and organize teaching materials for camp programs
  • Act as general support to the Education Department as new goals and initiatives arise 
  • Capacity to confidently and accurately enact Conservancy safety procedures required by staff, program partners and program participants
  • Effectively communicate and work directly with Park Operations if needed to successfully facilitate programs
  • Interface with and respond to questions from learners and park visitors of all ages

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Degree in or currently studying environmental education, with a strong passion for developing as an educator
  • Dependability and flexibility required
  • Knowledge of marine science, urban ecology, and/or sustainability
  • Experience and/or comfort in working with children, including ESL and special needs students
  • Deep commitment to positive youth development and willingness to interact with the general public
  • Self-starter with positive, can-do attitude and ability to communicate effectively
  • Capability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, as well as the ability to perform physical labor (able to lift 40 pounds, regularly) and perform work at the natural shore line and on unstable ground
  • Spanish proficiency preferred, but not required

The Conservancy requires all employees to be fully vaccinated and show proof of their vaccine status prior to their start date. Additionally, all employees are required to follow our COVID-19 protocols to control the spread of COVID-19 and to ensure the health, safety, and welfare of our employees, partners and program participants.

COMPENSATION: $20 per hour.

This position is estimated to be 28 hours/week, with a start date between June 20th and June 27th, and will end on August 26th. The role will be on a Tues-Friday schedule, working 8am-4pm.
