Summary
Do you love working with students outdoors? Teaching scientific concepts? Building community in nature? The Commissions' Fish and Wildlife Education Division is seeking an enthusiastic and knowledgeable Seasonal Educator to join our team (one March-June, and one March-October).
JOB DUTIES: A qualified individual will spend much of their time planning and leading outdoor field experiences throughout Nebraska for diverse participants, with some additional educational programming at parks, schools, community centers, libraries, and special events focused on wildlife and Nebraska's natural resources. Additional conservation and recreation programs like kayaking will also be common. Duties also include working with staff to care for and educate with animals including snakes, turtles, and frogs. Additionally, provide assistance and work with volunteers and staff to support large events, organize activities, and grow existing education programs. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: At least six months experience working in a recreational area, scenic attraction, hospitality, historical, retail or customer service setting, agricultural setting, or related coursework/training.
Other: Valid driver’s license is required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
Knowledge of: Environmental education best practices; leading group activities, Nebraska plant and wildlife species, natural resources, and outdoor recreation activities like kayaking; basic science and ecological principles; animal care; and safe work procedures.
Skills in: Educating people of all levels and interests; teaching through inquiry; communicating clearly with people from a variety of backgrounds both in person and online; entry level outdoor recreation practices; administration of first aid and CPR preferred; bilingual preferred.
Ability to: Communicate with and effectively educate a variety of age groups; work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions; have a flexible schedule; understand and follow instructions; work and make decisions independently; facilitate programs and tasks in an organized manner; direct volunteers; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and administrative personnel; recognize safety hazards and take steps for risk mitigation; apply agency policies pertinent to assigned work and direction of assigned crews; bend, stoop, climb, lift and carry up to 40 lbs., reach frequently; remain standing and/or walking for long periods of time.
