The Seasonal Educator is a member of the Duke Farms Programs Team who advances the foundation’s mission by effectively communicating stewardship and sustainability through direct instruction to students and general public learners. The Seasonal Educator will be responsible for developing educational opportunities and lesson plans as well as implementing them to a wide variety of audiences, while using their naturalist knowledge and experience and as an educator to support learning.

Summary

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Drive the understanding and commitment to stewardship, sustainability and conservation among visitors and students through immersive, experiential education at Duke Farms.
  • Innovate and create lesson plans in alignment with New Jersey Student Learning Standards and Next Generation Science Standards, using Duke Farms as a dynamic educational environment.
  • Contribute to the distribution of accurate information, comprehensive support materials and strategic recommendations related to Duke Farms’ programs, facilities and mission.
  • Play a key role in developing educational opportunities, with a focus on (i) engaging school groups from environmental justice communities along the Raritan River and (ii) weekend visitors from diverse backgrounds.
  • Tailor educational experiences for specialized student and public groups, ensuring accommodations and personalized attention where necessary. 
  • Perform other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, natural sciences or other related field.
  • Robust knowledge base in critical areas such as climate change, sustainability, conservation and the indigenous flora and fauna of New Jersey.
  • Two years’ experience in a related field.
  • Comfortable speaking to large groups of varying ages, backgrounds and abilities. 
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational abilities and communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills with experience in Zoom, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Canva, and ability to learn and use new programs.
  • Ability to work in a variety of outdoor conditions including but not limited to heat, cold, sun exposure, and wet weather with potential exposure to poison ivy, ticks, mosquitoes, etc. 
  • Ability to work outside traditional business hours including weekends and evenings.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Compensation Information

  • Hourly rate of $18.
  • 15% employer contribution 401(k).
