Located on beautiful Lake Wylie, the Environmental Education Center and Conference & Retreat Program provide unique learning experiences for school groups and community groups. Our curriculum of 24 classes range in topics from aquatic, forest, and wildlife ecology to astronomy, pioneer study, canoeing, and team building.

Our spring 2023 season runs January 16 - May 12, 2023!

Summary

Do you love to work outside, have a sense of humor, and enjoy working with children? Spend a season in the sunny Carolinas as a School Year Programs Instructor with YMCA Camp Thunderbird! Located on beautiful Lake Wylie (~30 minutes from Charlotte, North Carolina), the Environmental Education Center and Conference & Retreat Program provide unique learning experiences for school groups and community groups. Instructors teach classes during the week for our Environmental Education Center and lead programs for visiting retreat groups.

YMCA Camp Thunderbird's Environmental Education Center offers 24 different environmental and outdoor education classes that align with North and South Carolina curriculum standards for grades K-12. Instructors lead groups of approximately 20 students through various classes throughout the day, ranging in topics from aquatic, forest, and wildlife ecology to astronomy, pioneer study, canoeing, and team building. Located on 1.7 miles of pristine Lake Wylie shoreline in South Carolina, our setting provides an ideal classroom for enriching education experiences.

The mission of our Environmental Education Center is to:

  • Foster a respect for our physical and social environment
  • Develop life skills
  • Instill responsibility and confidence through interactive experiences in a dynamic learning environment

Two evenings a week, instructors lead meals and evening programs. Weekend work is required on a rotating basis with two days off per week. 

Compensation includes $400/week, staff housing, most meals, free internet, a complimentary Charlotte YMCA membership, and a staff training period that offers CPR, first aid, and lifeguard certifications. Staff live on-site with their own bedrooms and shared living space.

Previous experience working with children is highly recommended.

Positions available January 16 - May 12, 2023 with potential for extension summer and fall 2023.
