School Garden Coordinator Fellowship

OVERVIEW & IMPACT

The school garden coordinator will be responsible for bringing the vision of a working school garden to life. The garden will be a place for sustainable education, food equity, and real-life skills. The garden will also serve as a therapeutic space and support a vision for sustainability and food equity in our community. 

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Work closely with the school principal to co-create the vision for the school garden and continued benefit for the school community
• Continue to evolve a 6-bed garden including planning and maintenance in the beginning stages of implementation. Continue to build out the infrastructure including planting, irrigation, and some building. 
• Work with small groups of students during the school day in the school garden on gardening tasks
• Work outdoors year-round, mostly independently. 
• Coordinate with our after-school program, and manage the school garden club with middle school students. 
• Build and maintain a parent volunteer program. 
• Establish community-based partnerships that benefit the school garden. 
• Compost program: manage school lunch compost program including compost maintenance. 
• Expected schedule: At the school site daily (10:00 am - 6:00 pm)
• Ensure that students have access to a positive and productive learning environment by enforcing all campus safety rules and behavior expectations 
• Demonstrate the school values and support students in doing the same

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Preferred: At least 2-3 years of facilitation or teaching experience with youth aged 10-14 (outdoor group management experience preferred)
• Preferred experience working with school gardening programs
• At least a high school diploma or equivalent is required
• Knowledge of gardening, specifically knowledge of innovative and green practices
• Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production or home gardening
• Knowledge of or interest in topics including urban gardening, botany, environmental science, health and nutrition, food systems, food access
• Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations including youth and adults
• Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills
• Ability to work independently and be flexible
• Computer skills and project management skills
• Regular and reliable attendance and dependability
• Spanish speakers are preferred

FELLOWSHIP EXPERIENCE AT KIPP PRIZE SCHOOL

• A Prize employee receives robust professional development including weekly coaching meetings, weekly professional development, and training in the Summer. 

CLIMATE CORPS AMERICORPS QUALIFICATIONS

• Be U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents
• Have a high school diploma/GED
• Be 17 years old or older
• Pass state criminal and FBI background checks, and a national check on the Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Registry
• Test negatively for tuberculosis if working with minors
• Be vaccinated against COVID-19 or submit to weekly testing
• Live in the state of California
