RiverLink is one of the leading protectors of the French Broad River and encourages people to experience, learn, and conserve this beautiful watershed. RiverCamp seeks to educate and empower the next generation of watershed stewards, providing summer opportunities for outdoor exploration for rising 3rd-8th grade students. We’re looking for counselors to help guide campers through hands-on environmental education, river recreation, and social and emotional activities.

Summary

Duration: June 10th - June 28th & July 8th - 19th, ~40 hours/week. Mandatory half-day orientation during the week of June 3rd.

Location:  Based in Asheville, NC, with activities throughout the French Broad River Watershed.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and facilitate activities for a group of up to 12 campers daily, from 8:30 am to 4 pm.
  • Lead activities including river recreation (rafting, swimming, canoeing), environmental education lessons, and social and emotional activities.
  • Compassionately manage camper behavior, ensuring a safe and positive experience for all.
  • Assist with transportation of campers in a 15-passenger van.
  • Help with aftercare for campers from 4 pm to 5:30 pm (this is not everyday).
  • Maintain professional communication with parents and guardians.
  • Represent RiverLink positively and guide campers to do the same while in public.
  • Engage campers in icebreakers, games, or other activities during downtime.

Requirements:

  • Candidates must be at least 21 years old and eligible to work legally in the United States.
  • Clean driving record; experience and comfort driving large vehicles preferred.
  • Willingness to undergo a background check. A positive outcome does not disqualify candidates; it serves as an opportunity for discussion.
  • Attendance at each day of camp and the orientation is mandatory.
  • Ability to work outdoors for 8 hours a day and participate in physical activities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Preferably possess knowledge about stream ecology and environmental science.
  • Experience and enthusiasm for working with youth, preferably ages 8-14.
  • Ability to remain calm and prioritize camper and staff safety in stressful situations.
  • Collaborative mindset to work effectively with other counselors and the camp director.
  • Strong communication skills with both parents and campers.
  • Positive attitude and patience when interacting with campers and parents.
