Position Summary:

The Program Coordinator supports the University's commitment to environmental justice, sustainability and community-based, outdoor experiential learning by facilitating strong relationships between the University and regional community partners. The coordinator reports to the Director of the Sound Policy Institute and works closely with the Environmental Policy and Decision Making Department as well as other campus departments working on community engagement and experiential learning.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

The Program Coordinator collaborates with the Director, other campus colleagues and community members to create, plan, organize and lead initiatives such as field-based experiential learning opportunities, workshops, meetings and speaker events for campus and community members on environmental and equity issues of concern. This work entails taking an active and continuing role in community meetings, events and projects to build lasting relationships. Field-based experiential learning opportunities will require the coordinator to help develop curricula and teach outdoor and leadership skills that complement and are integrated with the academic program. The Program Coordinator helps participants learn about, manage and reflect on group dynamics, while also managing logistics related to transportation (including driving vehicles as needed), meal planning and preparation, and camping/lodging arrangements when needed. The Program Coordinator works with campus risk management protocols to ensure the safety of experiential learning participants and serves as primary first responder for medical care. The Program Coordinator leads the development and maintenance of the Sound Policy Institute web and social media presence and serves as University contact for members of the campus community and members of our wider community.

Qualifications:

The Program Coordinator should have at least five years experience working with Outward Bound/NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) type outdoor programs. A Master's degree in a related field such as environmental education or environmental studies/science is a plus, as is experience working with college students. Skill and experience in guiding two or more types of outdoor pursuits (e.g. backpacking, rock climbing, rafting, kayaking, etc.) is also recommended. The ideal Program Coordinator can deal with ambiguity, work creatively both as a team member and independently to design and implement programs, act with composure and integrity both on campus and in the wider community, and be skilled in diversity, equity, and inclusion work. A Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification, food worker permit issued by a county or state in the United States, and completion of a passenger van driving course is required by the employment start date. The Program Coordinator must have a valid driver's license and excellent driving record.

Compensation and Benefits: The anticipated pay for this position is $19.72 - $22.66 DOE. Decisions about starting salaries are made based on the extent and relatedness of the candidate's education and experience and on internal equity and market considerations.
