The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Public Engagement Specialist in the Executive Director Division. Reporting to the Senior Project Manager II, you will provide oversight, management, and instruction in fulfilling MMSD's organizational outreach efforts. You will also educate, inform, and create public awareness of the various causes and impacts of water pollution and stormwater runoff, the improvement of water quality, the importance of green infrastructure, and water conservation stewardship and sustainability.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and lead efforts to create forums, workshops, and other opportunities to educate the public on regional water issues and the role MMSD plays in improving water quality.
  • Serve as internal support in the area of meeting outreach goals, track progress towards the goals, and provide reports on efforts, initiatives, and progress towards achieving the goals.
  • Coordination, strategic planning, development, and implementation of MMSD-wide outreach plans and program initiatives.
  • Create, compile, update, and distribute highly effective multimedia outreach instructional materials, learning tools, web-based platforms, and other informational resources across a broad range of stakeholders.
  • Develop a broad range of partnerships and relational networks with agencies, companies, non-profit organizations, resident groups, and leaders with vested interests in achieving MMSD goals for water quality. 
  • Successfully negotiate and develop Memorandum of Understandings (MOU) for contracted services and grants in which MMSD is a designated partner.
  • Develop and implement outreach materials and marketing plan.  Conduct ongoing assessments of academic learning benchmarks and public outreach needs.
  • Provide direction, orientation, training, and support to seasonal interns and/or individuals employed with or through MMSD via contract or association.
  • Complete special projects as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in communication, business, education, or related field. 
  • Four to five years of job-related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience interfacing with public, private, and community-based entities.
  • Experience in the development of outreach strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills.
  • Experience in public speaking and meeting facilitation.  
  • Experience in developing public relations materials.
  • Experience in compiling statistics and providing reports and presentations.
  • Highly effective project management experience.
  • Experience in planning workshops, meetings, or community events.
  • Experience with environmental education, issues, or outreach.
  • Exceptionally proficient computer and software skills and adept in learning new software, applications, and industry trends in data management.
  • Grant proposal writing and multilingual skills are desirable.
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record at time of application, during the selection process, and throughout employment.
Supplemental Information

Occasional evening and weekend hours are required for attendance at outreach events.  

While performing the duties of this job, you will work in an office environment 70% of the time and travel within MMSD's service area 30% of the time. The noise level is moderate.  

Requires the use of safety glasses, hard hat, steel-toed shoes, hard hat, coveralls, gloves, hearing protection, rain gear, and safety vest as dictated by the location and nature of work that is being performed.

Compensation Information

Pay is $78,568.66 - $92,467.50 Annually
