Camp Beech Cliff (CBC) welcomes qualified applicants for the Outdoor Skills/Junior Maine Guide (JMG) Program Head position (Full-Time, Seasonal) for our premier traditional outdoor education day camp. With 50 acres of woods bordering Acadia National Park and extensive waterfront on Echo Lake, summers at CBC are all about having new experiences, making lasting friendships, and exploring the great outdoors. We take great pride in our accreditation with the American Camp Association (ACA) which drives everything we do in terms of health and safety. Most importantly we are known for our high quality staff and recommended by camper families!
Summary
Outdoor Skills/JMG Program Head duties include (but are not limited to):
- Plan logistics to execute established JMG curriculum (i.e. shelter building, fire starting, campfire cooking, tool use, tree identification, canoeing, and more);
- Provide engaging instruction of outdoor survival skills for campers grades 4th – 7th
- Facilitate weekly group dynamics to ensure a safe and fun experience for all campers
- Respond to individual camper needs (i.e. behavioral, social/emotional, disciplinary)
- Communicate and coordinate with a co-instructor and other traditional camp program counselors to provide an organized, well-planned outdoor skills program.
Considerations: Applicants should realize that the job of a camp counselor is challenging, demanding, and requires a great deal of patience and understanding. Personal lifestyle sacrifices may have to be made including disconnecting from daily use of digital technology during the camp day. Sensitive and dynamic leadership is necessary to provide youngsters the opportunity to grow, learn to positively relate to others, establish life-long values, and increase their appreciation of the natural world. All staff must adhere to the health and safety laws set forth by the State of Maine Dept of Human Services Youth Camps Division, and standards for accreditation with the American Camping Association.
Minimum qualifications: 21 years of age, enthusiasm for youth, personal initiative, organized, clear and honest communication skills, clean driving record, and ability to work with children of all backgrounds. Availability Early June – August 29th. This is a Full Time Seasonal Position.
Preferred qualifications: Registered Maine Guide or JMG alum; Current WFA or WFR, two years of direct experience leading wilderness activities for youth; lifeguard certification (we will train). Housing Available.
Never heard of the Junior Maine Guide Program? JMG is a long-established wilderness camping skills program sponsored by Maine Summer Camps and the Maine State Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. It is an outdoor skills program designed to foster enjoyable, safe and healthy outdoor living experiences for youth ages 9 – 18. JMG certification can lay the groundwork for later training and certification for a Maine Trip Leader permit, as well as provide a lifetime of enjoyment of living in concert with nature in the Maine wilderness. JMG uses current philosophies in outdoor living. Want to learn more? Visit this link to view job posting details.
