The MTOS Program Director leads the MTOS program by working directly with the Director of Camps and Outdoor Education to set short- and long-term strategy, provide programmatic oversight, directly manage staff within the program area, and coordinate with school leaders to position MTOS as the Southeast’s best residential outdoor education program.

Summary

Mountain Trail Outdoor School (MTOS) is the environmental education division of Kanuga. It
enjoys an advantage because of its location in the Southern Appalachians. This area boasts a rare
ecosystem with varying geology and species – one of the most diverse in the world. With wooded
acres of peaks and valleys, coves, streams, lakes and more than 20 miles of hiking trails, this natural
outdoor laboratory offers a learning experience free of distractions. At its core, MTOS offers
programs that provide the chance to experience safe community, grow physically and mentally,
improve self-confidence, and increase awareness and stewardship of our natural world.

The MTOS curriculum combines natural science study, community building and adventure-based
activities. To increase effectiveness, we work with teachers to meet their goals and expectations,
incorporating accepted standards for the appropriate grade levels. MTOS annually provides
education experiences to 5000 students from around the Southeastern United States, and is a central
part of Kanuga’s mission, vision, and core values.
