Summary
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Plan, develop, schedule, and conduct natural history programs for schools, special interest groups, nature camps, the public, and family programs.
- Fulfill duties as Summer Camp Director including maintaining state board of health and children’s summer camp requirements, conducting drills, and training and assisting seasonal summer staff.
- Maintain lesson plans, educational supplies, teaching materials, files and records, and all other programming information.
- Oversee, organize, and conduct administrative duties as needed including monthly records, program registration and sending out follow-up materials.
- Recruit & direct the training and supervision of the seasonal teacher-naturalists
- Recruit, train, and manage volunteers in aspects of programming.
- Interact with visitors to the center by answering questions about the natural world, programming opportunities, and NJ Audubon.
- Assist in the development of brochures and other center-specific marketing materials, including having a social media presence.
- Assist in the Center Nature Store and its operation as needed.
- Assist with the design and maintenance of interpretive exhibits,
- Work with the statewide education team to develop and assess programs.
- Interact with other NJA staff to promote statewide programming initiatives.
- Coordinate the care, feeding, and well-being of live animals (including a marine science lab) that are presented for educational purposes.
- Assist in the maintenance off all nature center spaces, grounds, gardens, and trails.
- Prepare written reports, proposals and plans as required.
- Network with local and state organizations expanding NJ Audubon’s presence to increase local awareness, support and participation.
- Attend center, department and NJ Audubon meetings and serve on committees as requested by supervisor.
- Strive to increase NJA membership
- Obtain and maintain certification for First Aid, CPR, and other public safety certification appropriate for the activities at the site.
- Participate with center staff to adopt a “team” approach towards daily operations at the assigned center.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A. or B.S. in the sciences or education, preferred.
- Minimum two years of experience teaching in a nature center or equivalent settings.
- Demonstrated experience in management/supervisory positions and coordinating volunteers.
- Demonstrated knowledge of natural history of New Jersey and coastal environments; bird migration/coastal ecology/marine science a plus.
- Excellent Computer Skills and Social Media skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Excellent organizational, time and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, shifting priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and leadership skills with the ability to relate to and motivate a diverse range of people, exercise cultural competence and inclusion, and accept direction and constructive feedback.
- Motivated self-starter able to work independently in the execution of his or her responsibilities while collaborating with other staff and organizations with the ability to demonstrate initiative and a positive attitude.
- Strong professionalism and work ethic with the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Flexibility to adjust hours to meet deadlines and needs of the organization, including availability to work occasional evenings and weekends and travel as needed.
- Must be able to walk on uneven surfaces and lift up to 50 as needed for programs and events.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be able to operate a motor vehicle in NJ.

Compensation Information
Salary Range: $45,000 to $48,000
