The Program Assistant delivers educational programs (primarily children’s and family programming) at Pringle Nature Center. This is a temporary, part-time, paid position scheduled on an as-needed basis for programming.

Summary

Description:                          

The Program Assistant delivers educational programs (primarily children’s and family programming) at Pringle Nature Center (PNC) in collaboration with other PNC staff and volunteers under the supervision of the Naturalist. This is a temporary, part-time, paid position scheduled on an as-needed basis for programming. Hours average 5-10 most weeks but vary depending on season. The majority of hours will be spent conducting and preparing for children’s educational programs. The Program Assistant is expected to be consistently available to assist with programming on at least 2 days per week during our regular programming hours (Tuesdays-Saturdays, 9 am-4 pm) with the possibility of occasional evening hours. PNC follows current CDC guidelines with respect to social distancing and mask use in indoor spaces and requires that staff members be fully vaccinated upon employment. Pringle Nature Center is located in Bristol Woods County Park, 9800 160th Avenue, Bristol, Wisconsin.

Essential Duties:

  • prepare, clean, and organize materials used during programs (40%)
  • conduct educational programs (school field trips, scouts/youth programs, summer camps, family programs, etc.) (40%)
  • attend all program trainings and staff meetings (10-20%)

Potential Duties (as needed):

  • review and suggest revisions to programs
  • staff the nature center outside of program hours
  • assist with animal care and general nature center maintenance

Qualifications:

Required qualifications:

  • at least 18 years of age
  • has consistent availability during programming hours
  • has reliable transportation to and from site
  • working knowledge of local ecology and willingness to learn more
  • 1 or more years’ experience working with children
  • speaks effectively before groups and interacts positively with both children and adults
  • communicates clearly and promptly with PNC staff
  • adapts to changing conditions with a positive attitude
  • conveys enthusiasm for nature and program topics
  • follows PNC policies regarding appropriate conduct and dress
  • passes a criminal background check
  • walks, hikes, and stands for extended periods of time in varying weather conditions and outdoor terrain
  • can lift objects up to 20 pounds in weight

Additional, preferred qualifications:

  • CPR/First Aid certified
  • experience with interpretation or teaching in an informal setting
  • 1 or more years’ experience/education in environmental science, biology, education, interpretation, or a related field
