The purpose of this position is to manage the Aquarium outreach education program. The Outreach Coordinator will act as a connection between the community and the aquarium, helping to expand our educational reach through innovative programming that highlights the importance of the various ecosystems found in NC. They will take our programs “on the road” and enhance accessibility of our mission to groups who may not have the opportunity to visit the Aquarium in person.

Summary

Daily Duties Include:

Design, develop, implement, and survey fee based environmental education programs offsite. These mission-based programs focus on native North Carolina species and habitats.
Deliver programs in a variety of ways including experiential, hands-on lab-based programs, large auditorium style presentations and smaller group settings.
Adapt programming to fit the audience’s needs. Program management will include anticipating needs and purchasing supplies, equipment, and teaching tools to support programs.
Recruit, provide orientation, train, schedule, and coordinate the activities of outreach program instructors, interns, and volunteers involved in programs.
Act as an Aquarium representative at local, regional, and state events such as festivals, fairs, career days, science fairs, etc.
Communicate effectively with Husbandry staff and stay up to date on current animal ambassador training and handling procedures. This position will be responsible for the care, husbandry, safety, and transport of live program animals for extended periods of time and potentially overnight. Program animals may include invertebrates, fresh and saltwater fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals.
