Do you enjoy working outside, working with kids, and teaching environmental science concepts? Consider joining the KOSS team as an Outdoor Science Instructor. You will work with students in grades 2-8 teaching topics such as forest ecology, geology, aquatic ecology, and fire ecology. You will have the opportunity to work at multiple locations in Southern Oregon, leading both field trips and Outdoor School programs.

Start date: April 16, 2025

Klamath Outdoor Science School is a non-profit organization based near Klamath Falls, OR offering field trips, residential Outdoor School, and summer camp programs to schools, families, and youth in Southern Oregon. 

Outdoor Science Instructors will be the primary instructors for lessons throughout our spring and summer 2025 programs, and will be responsible for small and large group instruction in field studies for students in grades 2-8. All curriculum and teaching materials are provided.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • Knowledge of basic natural history and ecological concepts;
  • Ability to effectively organize and manage instruction;
  • Ability to tailor instruction to meet student needs;
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills;
  • Ability to work with a diverse range of people and groups;
  • Ability to work within a timeframe and stay on schedule;
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively.

Preferred

  • Advanced knowledge of forestry, geology, ecology, ornithology, dendrology, herpetology, mammalogy, botany, or another field of study;
  • Knowledge of natural and cultural resources of Southern Oregon;
  • Familiarity with local species of plants and animals;
  • Familiarity with Next Generation Science Standards;
  • Familiarity with and understanding of the learning cycle;
  • Proficiency in a second language;
  • Understanding and knowledge of Trauma Informed Care and its applications;
  • Knowledge of equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDAI) principles;
  • Ability to engage with students in a culturally responsive manner.

Education and Work Experience

Required:

  • Education, volunteer, or work experience in environmental science, education, or related field
  • At least 1 year of formal teaching experience or 2 seasons of informal teaching experience

Preferred:

  • Experience working in an outdoor education program, summer camp, and/or residential Outdoor School program
  • Associate’s degree or higher in environmental science, education, or related field
  • Experience leading field trips or interpretive hikes
  • Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience working with neurodivergent youth or adults
  • Experience working with people with disabilities
