San Francisco Maritime National Park Association is seeking enthusiastic instructors for an innovative children’s (4th-8th grade) maritime history, teambuilding, and sail training program aboard historic sailing vessels. Starting in January, our programs run primarily during the school year with additional opportunities to work over the summer.

Deliver a 5 Hour “Living History” Field Trips aboard historic ships. This program is designed to fulfill the requirements of the California State Dept. of Education Frameworks for History – Social Science. Using the medium of role-playing and hands on activity, we create a cooperative learning environment for the students to develop the life skills of self-respect, respect for others, active listening, problem-solving, and teamwork. The students should finish the program with a greater awareness of the role of history in their lives, and an appreciation of San Francisco’s maritime heritage and their National Parks.

 

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize the program’s characters in role play to engage the students and meet the goals and objectives of the program, as described in the staff training manual and teacher’s guides dramatically and effectively.
  • Willingness to perform all roles
  • Setting up/breaking down all programs
  • Maintaining equipment and areas of the ship used for the program
  • Identify maintenance problems
  • Communicate problems/needs of staff and/or participants
  • Anticipate and react to problems proactively
  • Understand and maintain all safety rules and standards.
  • Interact professionally and positively with colleagues (Maritime Park Association staff, NPS staff and volunteers) and members of the public.
  • Perform necessary first aid for illness or injury, if required, during program.
  • Demonstrate general understanding of California history, (specifically the Gold Rush era) and U.S. history (specifically the Industrial Revolution, the end of the “century of steam” and the beginning of the “century of electricity”).
  • By the end of the 90-day probation period, demonstrate a general knowledge of local maritime history, sail theory, and basic navigation. (This can be acquired through Park resources).
  • May be assigned other duties as requested by the Education Director including but not limited to program check-in, curriculum development, etc.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Pass a LIVESCAN background check.
  • Maintain CPR/First Aid certifications are required by all staff
  • Instructors must pass a series of tests based on the program content, skills, and safety regulations
  • Staff members may not work under the influence of any drug, legal or illegal. Staff members must always be in control of motor skills and exhibit clear judgment
  • Staff members must be ready to work (in costume and character) at the assigned start of the shift

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university OR two-year attendance at a college or university AND two years related experience and/or training is preferred.
Education requirements may be waived so long as candidate has significant experience in outdoor education or related field.
