Summary
The Bird School Project offers 4-week Life Science Units focused on birdwatching in the schoolyard to students grades 5-8. Using core naturalist routines like field journaling, making direct observations, and developing and asking questions, we bring students on a learning journey that is accessible to them the moment they step outside. The Bird School Project works with 5,000 students in the Monterey Bay region each year.
Qualifications:
- Some teaching/facilitating experience is helpful, but not necessary.
- Instructing/counseling at summer camp would count, or helping out with an after school program.
- Initiative, curiosity, commitment, value of community, and a value of environmental stewardship.
- Experience birding is not required, but is helpful. We can teach you if you are just excited to learn!
Description:
- Work collaboratively with a small team of outdoor educators to visit middle school and some 5th grade classrooms throughout Salinas, Watsonville, Seaside, and Santa Cruz to take students birding in their schoolyard.
- Receive birdwatching mentorship from BSP staff and advanced training in outdoor field science instruction.
- Build skills in group facilitation
- Be a part of a naturalist community in the Monterey Bay
Responsibilities:
- Available at least one school day each week ( Monday, Tuesday, Thursday or Friday) (8 am - 4 pm).
- Available for 1 week of paid training
- Available for the beginning of the semester team dinner and the end of the semester team wrap-up dinner in early December.
- Good communication with supervisors via email and phone.
- After you are trained up and have a chance to shadow a class, you will be responsible for leading small groups of no more than 15 students on schoolyard bird walks.
- Responsible for timeliness, showing up early and finishing tasks.
- Responsible for keeping binoculars, natural history museum loans, and birding field guides organized.
