Summary
The Naturalist Intern program provides interested college students and recent college graduates opportunities to assist staff naturalists in all facets of the educational and recreational programs at the nature center, as well as upkeep of trails and property. The Friends of Mosquito Hill organization provides an educational scholarship or mileage reimbursement for $2000 to one intern from June through August. Hours: 8:00 AM-4:00 PM, Tuesday-Friday (hours and days are flexible)
Under the direction of a staff naturalist, the intern will do the following:
- Assist or lead age appropriate ecology and outdoor programs for children and/or the general public
- Research program topics/activities and develop new educational/recreational programs
- Assist with monarch butterfly research
- Develop and maintain educational displays
- Assist with daily operations of nature center grounds and interpretive building
A firm personal commitment is required. Interns must be:
- Self motivated, reliable, work independently, committed to quality
- Prompt on scheduled work days
- Wear appropriate work place attire for safety reasons
- Able to hike on uneven terrain, work outdoors in various weather conditions and lift 50 pounds
- Demonstrate patience, willingness and interest to work with children and diverse personalities
- Provide own transportation
- Supply at least one reference from a professor or valid mentor
