This is an excellent opportunity to work with a great team of folks dedicated to conserving Alaska's natural resources and vital wildlife habitat. The seasonal Natural Resource Technician will assist the Invasive Species Program Manager and Natural Resource Specialists with a variety of technical tasks associated with terrestrial and aquatic invasive plant management on the Kenai Peninsula. The position includes conducting surveys for terrestrial invasive plants, acquiring a Pesticide Applicator Certification, implementing herbicide treatments, managing/processing spatial data using ArcGIS, and the potential for freshwater aquatic surveys.

The position includes conducting surveys for terrestrial invasive plants, acquiring a Pesticide Applicator Certification, implementing herbicide treatments, managing/processing spatial data using ArcGIS, and the potential for freshwater aquatic surveys.

The Homer Soil & Water Conservation District (Homer SWCD) is an outreach and technical assistance organization whose mission is to serve its cooperators, private landowners, and all citizens of the district by promoting wise development and conservation of natural resources. 

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Assist with terrestrial invasive plant projects, including planning and logistics, manual/mechanical and chemical control work, and surveys. Field work involves long days of driving, physical activities (e.g. digging, lifting, carrying backpacks), occasionally driving ATVs or paddling a canoe, and time spent in remote areas both on and off the road system across the Kenai Peninsula.

2. Maintain accurate, detailed data records using ESRI GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS online, Field Maps apps, ArcGIS Pro). Assist with post-processing of field data, quality control of data, and preparing reports.

3. Herbicide application at priority infestations along rights-of-ways, and public and private lands.

4. Assist the public with invasive plant questions/concerns.
