Old Woman Creek National Estuarine Research Reserve (OWC NERR) is now accepting applications for various part-time, intermittent NRT positions in Huron along Ohio’s Lake Erie shore. The OWC NERR is part of a state-federal partnership of 30 protected sites in the U.S. that promote stewardship of our nation’s estuaries through integrated research and education programs (https://coast.noaa.gov/nerrs/).

Summary

The successful applicant will join a team of environmental professionals that conduct research, education, training, and stewardship activities related to Old Woman Creek estuary and other Lake Erie coastal ecosystems.  The Reserve provides on-site education for students and the public including guided hikes and canoe tours, hands-on training for a variety of audiences to support decision-making and actions that benefit wildlife and water quality.  The Reserve also provides technical assistance to land/water managing agencies as well as conducts its own management activities, which include habitat surveys, invasive species removal, prairie burns, germination, and planting of native species. 

Information for 3 positions available: 

Education/Visitor Assistance (2 Positions)
Assists with development of communication and outreach products including both physical displays and virtual media.
• Assists with estuary and coastal wetland education programing for the public including educational talks, guided hikes, canoe, and facility tours.
• Staffs visitor center, answering public inquiries and orienting visitors to the Reserve.
• Provides live animal care, including fish, amphibians, and reptiles.
• Other duties as assigned.
• These positions require significant weekend and some evening hours.
 

Stewardship Assistance (1 Position)
• Assists with development and implementation of stewardship projects.
• Assists with community science initiatives, volunteer groups, and mapping projects.
• Provides support to general maintenance of land and water trails.
• Helps maintain weather station and associated data entry.
• Other duties as assigned.
 

Preferred qualifications:  Individuals who are self-starters, able to work within a team setting, and have strong public speaking and writing skills.  Applicants would benefit from knowledge of environmental science and/or education, natural resource management, communications, or a related field.  Understanding of water safety and First Aid/CPR certifications preferred. 

Compensation: $ 16.72; Hours per week: 20-30 
Please note:  This is a part-time, grant-funded position, with potential for renewal.
