Qualifications About the Position: This position may be filled at the developmental level, GS-05 or GS-07, or it may be filled at the full performance level, GS-09. If filled at the GS-05 or GS-07 level, the selectee will perform developmental assignments under closer than normal supervision. Assignments will become progressively more difficult until the full-performance level is reached.
This highly-motivated individual serves as a Natural Resources Specialist (Ranger) providing interpretive and environmental education services and outreach to diverse audiences such as: community groups, special needs groups, schools, partners, colleges and universities. Provides recreation visitor assistance, and cultural and historic interpretation. Reinforces and supports natural resources management partnerships.
Implements the Project interpretive plan to educate visitors about Corps missions and to promote the area as a regional and national destination.
Performs or assists in the preparation of exhibit maintenance and upgrades.
Patrols project lands and waters and implements Visitor Assistance program to promote public safety and security.
Develops and presents briefings, presentations, structured and impromptu talks, guided tours and hikes to cover all mission areas, including indigenous and non-native plants and animals, special status species, water safety, history, and navigation.
Communicates water resource project information to other agencies and/or the visiting public through news releases, bulletin boards, interpretive programs, correspondence, or telephone calls.
The Illinois Waterway Visitor Center, overlooking the Starved Rock Lock and Dam, is located less than five miles from three Illinois State Parks and one National Heritage Corridor. The surrounding Illinois River area is known for a variety of hiking, biking, kayaking, birdwatching, and other recreational opportunities. In addition to the natural beauty of the area, you will be one hour from the total city environment of Chicago or Peoria.
