Summary
Position Title: Natural Resource Specialist
Duration: 40hrs/week for 9 months, Starting June 2022
Type: Opportunity for Virtual or In-person
Albuquerque, NM Regional Office. If virtual is preferred, the incumbent will be expected to work in a location where they can provide a safe and ergonomically appropriate workspace for themselves. Internet access is required. A government-furnished computer will be provided.

Fellowship Description:
The Southwestern Region of the Forest Service is seeking someone with a bachelor’s or graduate degree in natural sciences (ecology, biology, forestry, environmental sciences, etc.). Experience in climate change and/or air quality is highly desirable. This position will work directly for the Regional Air Program Manager / Climate Change Coordinator, staffed in the regional office.
Responsibilities:
The RA will assist with a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving climate change and air quality programs. This will include helping the region successfully respond to the climate change scorecard, documenting trends in air quality, and assisting with science delivery.
Major Duties:
- Will assist in developing and compiling information for the region’s climate change scorecard. Topic areas include vulnerability assessments, climate adaptation, monitoring, carbon, watersheds, and sustainable operations
- Depending upon the RA’s interests and skills, the work could include science delivery, such as developing AGOL Story Maps of climate change adaptation work and summarizing and synthesizing scientific literature into briefing papers for practitioners
- Will assist in developing internal and external website content for air quality and climate change
- Will coordinate with the national IMPROVE lead to update air quality documents related to trends in visibility in the southwest
- Will assist in developing briefing papers on critical loads for practitioners
- Willingness to take notes in a variety of meetings in-person and virtually. Needs to be highly self-motivated and professional, and willing to speak in front of large groups of people.

Compensation Information
Stipend + Benefits:
- $650 weekly pay stipend based on a 40-hour workweek*
- $1000 monthly housing stipend and commuting stipend
- Optional health care benefit provided by the RAP partner at no cost to the resource assistant
- Up to $2,750 is available for Forest Service work travel, orientation, trainings, professional development opportunities that align with RA role and goals
- $50/month commuting stipend
- Paid Federal holidays and 40 hours of leave
- Direct Hiring Authority Eligibility – after completing a minimum of 960 hours (excluding orientation week), DHA status provides special non-competitive hiring status when applying for Forest Service positions.
