Music has a long tradition at Chewonki as a vital part of building community and for providing creative pathways of learning. We seek a joyful, student-centered music educator excited to work in a small school with an integrated, place-based curriculum. The music teacher creates and delivers music curriculum for students in grades 1-8 and directs instrument and vocal ensembles for our older students. This teacher works in collaboration with the teaching team to provide music instruction and integration throughout the school curriculum and activities.

Schedule (hours and weeks): Part-time: Up to ~12 hours a week - split between age groups

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Work to honor and uphold the principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and a lens of anti-racism in the best interest of participants, constituents, and staff across the organization
  • A willingness to work as a team member among the Elementary and Middle School program and the greater Chewonki community
  • Provide weekly general music instruction classes for the 1/2 and 3/4 multi-age classes
  • Provide weekly instrument and vocal instruction for 5/6 and 7/8 classes, through both whole group and smaller ensemble format
  • Plan and execute two concerts per year to include all students and skill levels
  • Provide special and ongoing music activities for the school community, including after-school or special event programming 

ADDITIONAL  RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Meet regularly with Head of Elementary and Middle School for planning and feedback purposes
  • Monitor student progress in music and provide written feedback on a trimester basis
  • Attend training and planning days across the calendar year as requested 
  • Join weekly faculty meetings as schedule allows
  • Work on the Chewonki campus
  • Contribute to and collaborate with the Chewonki community through committees and foundation wide events

PREREQUISITES

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education (Elementary or General) or formal music education/ training 
  • Experience playing musical instruments including some combination of woodwind, brass, percussion, and strings; and have the ability to teach others to play
  • Experience in early childhood music education and instruction
  • Prior experience working with elementary-aged children in a formal or informal educational setting
  • Must pass background check and undergo fingerprinting as required by Maine Department of Education
  • The Chewonki Foundation requires that 100% of staff are vaccinated against COVID-19, as allowed for by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Proof of completed COVID-19 vaccination will be required upon acceptance of a job offer.

REQUISITES
