for specific information and how to apply for the following opportunities:

  • YCC LEADER

Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) Leaders guide Montana Youth on conservation based service projects. These crews work on day projects with a Forest Service district, and provide young people meaningful work experiences while developing an ethic of environmental stewardship and civic responsibility. You'll have the chance to positively impact the lives of students, local communities, and some of the most treasured wild lands in the West.  Leaders work with a co-leader on rotating projects, working in one community to fully explore hands-on natural resource projects. YCC crews are based in remote, rural communities around Montana, with crew sizes of 5-8 participants. The youth participants typically go home every evening. Learn more about what your day looks like and the variety of project work!

  • EXPEDITION LEADER

Expedition Leaders support and supervise Montana high school youth in the successful completion of natural resource and community service projects, provide on-site management of a youth crew, implement curriculum and actively facilitate crew dynamics to ensure a high level of crew community and safety.   Expedition Leaders will work with a co-leader to oversee 4-6 youth participants on two-week overnight service projects.  Youth participants are Montana residents ages 14-18 years old and come from a variety of backgrounds. Each expedition will be with a different roster of youth participants.  Expedition Leaders and their crews will camp for the full duration of the two week session, oftentimes in remote locations on varied terrain and in all weather conditions. Camping accommodations vary, but tend to be car-camping in backcountry settings. Work may include building or maintaining trails, building fences, and habitat restoration, among many other types of conservation projects. • ASSISTANT FIELD CREW LEADER

As an assistant crew leader, you will work with your Crew Leader to oversee 3-4 adult crew members on 4-9 day overnight conservation projects on some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Northern Rockies and Plains. The crew you will help oversee will be made up of adults who are 17-30 years old and come from a variety of backgrounds and locations throughout the country. This is a leadership learning position that prioritizes crew member development; the assistant crew leader is a full partner in the crew’s leadership, helping to communicate crew direction, project goals, member management, and communication with regional staff teams.  In conjunction with your Crew Leader, you will take a large role in the technical training of crew members, and provide vital mentorship to new members.  Crews will camp for the full duration of a hitch (i.e. 4-9 day project assignment), oftentimes in remote locations on varied terrain and in all weather conditions. Camping accommodations vary, including car-camping and remote backcountry settings away from a vehicle. Project work is physically demanding, and could include trail maintenance and construction, habitat restoration, mesic restoration, planting, backcountry work, forest fuels reduction, and more.
