Dauphin Island Sea Lab’s Discovery Hall Programs has an opening for a marine science educator to work within a collaborative education and outreach group. This is a full-time, year-round position with benefits.

DHP educators develop and teach high quality on-site and off-site hands-on informal educational programs (field-based, in-school and virtual) about marine and coastal issues to K-12 students, teachers and the general public year-round. Off-site programs include overnight travel throughout the state as part of our BayMobile program as well as occasional outreach events.

Educators also work on grant-funded projects, make presentations at national and state conferences, participate in professional development activities, and assist in evaluations of DHP programs.

DISL’s mission is to be a center for transformative U.S. oceanic and coastal research and education in Alabama. As an integral part of DISL, Discovery Hall Programs’ vision is to be a center of excellence in experiential education about the Gulf of Mexico and the ocean for PreK-gray audiences.

Applicants should be reliable, dynamic, creative, innovative, team-oriented, positive-thinking, flexible, a self-starter and willing to get wet and muddy. They should have excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to work with variety of audiences, abilities, backgrounds, ages and with all types of learners with patience and positivity.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver established and assist in the development of new programs in coastal habitats (including large and small vessel trips and kayak trips) for outdoor field classes and outdoor activities to school-age children onsite at DISL

  • Deliver established and assist in the development of new STEM hands-on classes for K-12 students onsite at DISL and across the state

  • Deliver established and assist in the development of new marine science programs virtually and in schools across the state

  • Participate in outreach efforts to students across Alabama and the general public across the Gulf coast

  • Participate and collaborate in the development and implementation of grants to support educational programing and specific activities for K-12 students and educators

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • As part of a team, teach K-12 students and teachers onsite at DISL about northern Gulf of Mexico coastal ecosystems using a field-based hands-on approach; virtually and in classrooms across Alabama using experiential strategies

  • Conduct outreach about northern Gulf Coast coastal ecosystems at educational and environmental outreach events

  • Participate in departmental events (meetings, retreats) and decision-making; pursue individual and team professional development

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science with a major appropriate for the field of marine science

  • Valid state driver’s license and clean driving record

  • Ability to pass and comply with all drug testing policies and other procedures including background check

  • Ability to sustain flexible work schedule, including evening, weekend, and holiday hours

  • Ability to obtain CPR and 1st aid certification

  • Ability to obtain CDL (bus) certification

  • Comfortable in and around the water and on kayaks, boats

  • Computer skills – Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), presentation software, social media and Google

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with northern Gulf of Mexico coastal ecosystems

  • Master’s degree in marine science or secondary education

  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred)

  • Experience with aquatic robotics

Restrictions: There is a 6 months probationary period for all DISL employment contracts.

Compensation Information

Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience. DHP’s salary range is similar to that for resource teachers in the Mobile County Public School System.
