FLSA Status: Exempt

Hours: Full-time (Tuesday - Saturday; 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM with some flexibility required)

Pay Rate: Range starts at $62,135/year

Summary:

Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium's Manager of Scouts and Campouts is a member of the Education team and provides vision strategy necessary for the Zoo to deliver on its mission through educational programs and initiatives. In addition, this role will create, implement, facilitate, maintain, and evaluate the Zoo and Wildlife Safari Park (WSP) campout programs. The function is to create dynamic learning environments and experiences that will change conservation behavior and promote stewardship for all living organisms. This will be accomplished through the promotion of the Zoo and Wildlife Safari Park mission, goals, and objectives while providing positive Zoo and Wildlife Safari Park experiences for visitors, children, volunteers, and staff. The position reports directly to the Vice President of Education.   

Duties and Responsibilities/Essential Functions (include but not limited to): 

  • Plan, develop, evaluate, and launch new overnight lessons and programs to align with education framework, state and national standards, and Zoo conservation messaging.
  • Develop and implement evaluation plans to ensure effectiveness of all programs in collaboration with the Visitor Experience and Research Evaluation team.
  • Develop, manage, and monitor budgets monthly.
  • Develop program goals and action plans to ensure they are aligned with education framework and Zoo/WSP strategic plan annually.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate continuous professional growth training programs for campout staff and volunteers.
  • Conduct observations and provide coaching/mentoring opportunities for staff and volunteers.
  • Promote programs through websites, social media, digital newsletter, zoo prints, personal contact, mailing, and areas conferences.
  • Develop community partnerships to meet the needs of campouts and guests.
  • Serve as a Zoo representative at all community competition boards and committee meetings and represent the Zoo/WSP at meetings and media spots when the Vice President of Education is not available.
  • Coordinate and run community STEM competitions (Metro Science and Engineering Fair, Science Olympiad, NE SciFest, and future competitions).
  • Perform monthly maintenance and upkeep of program records.
  • Prepare and submit grant proposals and sponsorships.
  • Attend quarterly safety meetings and report to Education staff on department accomplishments and challenges.
  • Coordinate required safety drills, trainings (CPR, first aid, mandatory reporting) and certificates for entire education department. Responsible for the safety and security of all guests and staff participating in overnight programs.
  • Ensure maintenance of all platforms, consult on troubleshooting issues, inform on updates, track follow-ups, and alert on corrected actions.
  • Train and support Education staff in adhering to operational, safety, data management, and administrative systems policies and procedures.
  • Notify building supervisors and security of scheduled programs.
  • Facilitate registration/scheduling process for programs.
  • Advertise, interview, hire and supervise part time staff.
  • Prepare and send out monthly Paycom work schedules for part time staff.
  • Annually reviewing, updating and maintaining education department policies and procedures.
  • Submit bi-weekly payroll for part time campout staff.
  • Works closely with WSP Coordinator as the education liaison.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in education, biological sciences or applicable field.
  • Demonstrable experience leading complex teams and education programs.
  • Demonstrable experience in program evaluation tools and industry best practices.
  • Flexibility in scheduling to include weekends and occasional holidays and after-hours assignments. Schedule may vary during campout season.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communication skills. 
  • Enjoy working with people of all ages and backgrounds.
  • Enthusiastic about ecology and able to teach using nature to explain biological concepts.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Work Environment/Physical Demands: 

  • Primarily in an office and classroom setting.
  • Outdoor classrooms and exposure to the elements is required. 

Travel Required:

  • Some travel is required (conferences, workshops).
