The Learning Specialist will serve a fundamental role in The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature’s Learning and Public Programs Department as well as other museum programs and events. This person will facilitate high-quality guest experiences by developing and delivering our family, school, and public programs.

Summary

The Learning Specialist will serve a fundamental role in The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature’s Learning and Public Programs Department as well as other museum programs and events. This person will facilitate high-quality guest experiences by developing and delivering our family, school, and public programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Provide both formal and informal interpretation of all areas of the Museum for school and adult groups, as well as general public visitors through inquiry and active learning.
  • Lead and support field trips, science camps, outreach programs, community partnership programs, and other public engagements as determined by strengths, interests, and department needs.
  • Facilitate the Mosaic Backyard Universe and other exhibition spaces, including engaging with guests and maintaining exhibition cleanliness.
  • Contribute to the development, maintenance, and evaluation of programs and materials.
  • Assist with training and mentorship of new staff and volunteers.
  • Assist with documentation and care of the educational collections.

Qualities:

  • Ability to work well in a team as well as independently;
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Comfortable working with groups and individuals of all ages and backgrounds;
  • Customer-oriented and willing to engage with visitors;
  • Adaptable and flexible;
  • Strong skills with MS Office products;
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule to include weekdays, weekends, and some evenings;
  • Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time;
  • Must be able to lift, pull, and push 25 pounds;
  • Spanish fluency highly preferred.
