The Land Stewardship Intern (LSI) will help build Westerly Land Trust’s long-term capacity by working closely with the Land Stewardship Manager to support land conservation and stewardship efforts. The LSI will collaborate to resolve any emergent issues on protected properties with high sensitivity and professionalism; document, record, and file pertinent information relating to stewardship visits, issues, and activities on WLT properties; support WLT’s plan for ecological land management, including control of invasive species, native habitat monitoring, and custodial land management (trail and equipment maintenance, groundskeeping, photo monitoring, mapping); and engage and support stewardship volunteers and other interns.

Summary

Qualifications 

  • Minimum of one year of college for students working towards a degree in environmental science, biology, or a related field. Equivalent professional/career experience considered.
  • Basic knowledge of southern New England ecology. • Basic GPS and map skills – familiarity with ArcGIS is a plus.
  • Willingness to use hand tools and basic power equipment (string trimmers, mowers, brush cutters, etc.). Operation and safety training provided.
  • Comfortable working outside, sometimes in adverse conditions.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and walk 3-5 miles through uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Diligent notetaking and observation skills
  • A positive, upbeat attitude and ability to anticipate needs.
  • A reliable means of transportation. 
  • Demonstrated interest or experience in environmental conservation and biological field sciences.
