Flat Rock Brook Nature Association in Englewood, New Jersey is looking for a Land, Building and Grounds Manager who would be responsible for the oversight and operation of all land resource management and building activities at Flat Rock Brook Nature Center. The Land, Buildings and Grounds Manager is expected to be knowledgeable in facilities and grounds management activities, and manage a professional staff of land stewards, buildings and grounds staffers while also supervising the work of numerous volunteers to deliver our land resource management mission goals.

Summary

Functions and Duties:

Land Resource Management –

  • Supervise Land Stewards and volunteers to protect trails and natural resources
  • Maintain sustainable public access for educational and recreational use
  • Design wildlife habitat plans alongside the Director of Operations
  • Execute the 10-year Forest Stewardship Plan (2026-2036)
  • Collaborate with Board committees on ongoing plant and animal studies and maintenance
  • Manage invasive and native species using GPS/GIS mapping technologies
  • Partner with universities and government to conduct scientific research

Building Oversight -

  • Maintain relationships with partners and coordinate with vendors/contractors to make sure that land and building maintenance, structures and equipment are being adequately maintained  
  • Utilize best practices from similar organizations to improve Nature Center operations
  • Coordinate building sustainability projects using ecological best practices

Administrative -

  • In conjunction with Director of Operations, develop/manage the land resource program budget
  • Implement grant proposals and prepare quantitative data, images from activities, and necessary textual support for grant writing and reporting 
  • Prepare land, building & grounds reports as needed by supervisor(s)
  • Coordinate land resources team systems, tasks, work schedules and calendars

Additional Responsibilities -

  • Help coordinate and implement special events
  • Assist education and land resource management staff in the proper care of captive animals
  • Ensure that land resource department staff provide coverage of the Nature Center building for public open hours on Saturdays 

Qualifications:

  • 5 years+ of experience managing staff and volunteers in a Nature Center, park system or other related setting preferred
  • Knowledge of how to build, repair and maintain property & equipment is strongly recommended 
  • Physical Demands: Position requires frequent standing and hiking, occasional bending or squatting. Must be able to move or transport items weighing up to 40 lbs. independently.
  • Good computer skills, and familiarity with GPS/GIS a plus
  • Ability to work with volunteers, government entities, peer organizations, and research institutions is a requirement  
  • Background check/criminal history check required 
  • Strong preference for candidate who can work Saturdays, and some Sundays and evenings

Time Commitment: 

Start will be 24 hours per week with Saturdays a very strong preference and some evening and Sunday hours required.  The potential for full-time hours for the right candidate that excels in the position & budget parameters allow. 

Expected Start Date: October 2026

Salary Range: $24-$28 per hour depending on relevant management and work experience
