Kodiak Refuge Environmental Education Volunteer Internship

Interns will work directly with USFWS staff to develop materials and lead summer science camps for youth (K–8th grade) in the Kodiak, Alaska Region. We provide roundtrip transportation, housing, vehicle use, food costs reimbursed, scholarship after successfel completion, and training to prepare for the season. College internship credit is available in coordination with colleges and universities (but not required).

Dates and Duration: Up to 16 week volunteer environmental education internship in Kodiak, Alaska.

Schedule: 40 hours a week: Typically, Monday-Friday with occasional weekend work for special events or camp preparations.

Location: Kodiak Island is the second largest island in the United States.  While the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge encompasses nearly two million acres of the island, the refuge itself is not accessible by road. Refuge offices, intern housing and all of our education programs are located on the road system just outside the city limits of Kodiak.  Please note: This is a 40 hour/week, summer-long environmental education internship on an island. If you're looking to spend a summer season on a beautiful Alaskan island doing work dedicated to providing engaging science education to interested young learners, then by all means apply!

Requirements:

• U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age.  

• Ability to undergo and pass a background check.  

• Valid U.S. driver’s license. Driving is required for camp positions.  

• Interest in working with youth of all ages and willingness to spend time outside rain or shine.  

Desired background: Degree-seeking students and/or graduates in the fields of environmental studies, environmental education, biology, wildlife conservation, outdoor recreation, or similar fields, and/or experience with or interest in youth science camps, summer camps, educating youth, scouts, or other related work.
