Support and coordinate researchers, academic programs, and operations of Shoals Marine Laboratory while living and working on an island off the coast of Maine at the undergraduate marine laboratory for Cornell University and University of New Hampshire.

Summary

Summary of Position

• Support and coordinate researchers, academic programs, and operations of SML.

• Manage boat schedules and logistics of arrival, orientation, housing, departure of students, faculty, and other visitors.

• Supervise Assistant Island Coordinator, and ensure that there is a smooth transition of duties when out of the office or off island.

• Support Assistant Island Coordinator to train, supervise and assist student workers in the maintenance of the Appledore Island campus including kitchen prep/cleanup and general housekeeping.

• Serve as supporting scientific crew aboard SML’s research vessels.

• As time allows, participate in the collection and maintenance of biological specimens.

• If required, Implement, and oversee operations related to COVID-19 testing of SML participants and staff.

• Support, conducting tours of laboratories, facilities, and natural history.

• Responsible for billing visitors, visiting researchers, and non-student participants.

• Foster a safe, inclusive, and welcoming environment for undergraduate students, researchers, and visitors.

• Implement initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

• Operate the Appledore Island store.

• Expected to be available for consultation and emergency response at all times on days scheduled to be working, and while on SML property and vessels.

• Serve as a crew member on board a commercial or an oceanographic vessel.

Compensation Information

$900/week, plus room and board while on Appledore Island.
