Interpretive Naturalist

Programs may include guided hikes, school field trips, tabletop and pop-up programs, formal presentations, and community outreach events. Interpretive Naturalists also engage directly with visitors by answering questions, providing orientation and resource information, and fostering a welcoming, informative visitor experience. The position works collaboratively with federal land management partners to ensure programs align with site goals and enhance public understanding and stewardship of RRCNCA. 
Located approximately 17 miles west of Las Vegas, Nevada, Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area is a protected landscape known for its dramatic red rock formations, rugged canyons, and diverse desert ecosystems. RRCNCA welcomes approximately four million visitors each year and is one of Southern Nevada’s most popular outdoor recreation destinations. Its proximity to Las Vegas attracts both local residents and tourists seeking opportunities for hiking, rock climbing, scenic drives, wildlife viewing, and connection with the region’s natural beauty. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Interpretive Naturalist at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area include, but are not limited to, the following: 

1. Program Development and Delivery 

• Design, develop, coordinate, and lead interpretive and educational programs, guided hikes, outreach activities, and special events that connect visitors to the natural, cultural, and historical resources of Red Rock Canyon NCA.
• Lead and facilitate programs tailored to diverse audiences, including school groups, local families, tourists, and special interest groups.
• Deliver and manage a variety of interpretive offerings—such as talks, nature walks, field trips, and special events—ensuring programs are engaging, inclusive, accurate, and accessible. 

2. Visitor Interaction 

• Engage directly with visitors by providing high-quality customer service and responding to inquiries related to park resources, interpretive programs, recreation opportunities, and visitor services.
• Lead daily Visitor Center walks and programs that interpret the natural and cultural history of RRCNCA, including flora, fauna, geology, human history, and recreational opportunities.
• Communicate accurate visitor information via phone and in person, including hours of operation, reservation systems, access information, and other visitor-related inquiries. 

3. Resource Education and Stewardship 

• Lead educational efforts that promote conservation awareness and foster an understanding of the importance of protecting natural and cultural resources.
• Integrate and communicate Leave No Trace principles and sustainable practices throughout interpretive programs and visitor interactions.
• Provide safety orientation and guidance for visitors engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking and climbing, emphasizing risk awareness and responsible recreation. 

4. Collaboration and Outreach 

• Collaborate actively with Bureau of Land Management staff, volunteers, and partner organizations to plan and deliver cohesive interpretive and educational programming.
• Lead and participate in school programs, community outreach initiatives, and special events designed to increase awareness and appreciation of RRCNCA.
• Develop and contribute to interpretive materials, including brochures, exhibits, educational signage, website content, and social media posts.  

5. Monitoring and Evaluation 

• Track, document, and report visitor participation and engagement in interpretive programs and activities.
• Evaluate program effectiveness by collecting visitor feedback and assessing outcomes to support continuous improvement and alignment with interpretive goals.
• Monitor and maintain interpretive assets, including exhibits, signage, and other visitor-facing educational resources. 

6. Administrative and Logistical Responsibilities 

• Coordinate and manage logistics for interpretive programs and events, including setup, breakdown, materials preparation, and site readiness.
• Maintain accurate records related to program attendance, supplies, schedules, and reporting requirements.
• Ensure compliance with safety protocols, operational guidelines, and applicable regulations during all interpretive activities. 

7. Professional Development 

• Remain current on best practices, trends, and emerging approaches in environmental education and interpretation.
• Participate in professional development activities, including trainings, workshops, and conferences, as appropriate.
• Maintain required certifications and qualifications necessary to perform the duties of the position. 

This position requires a strong commitment to education, conservation, and connecting people to the natural world. The Interpretive Naturalist team at Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area serves as a vital link between visitors and the area’s natural and cultural resources, delivering meaningful experiences that inspire appreciation, understanding, and long-term stewardship. 

Qualifications and Experience 

1. Education 

• Bachelor’s degree in Interpretation, Education, Environmental Science, Natural Resource Management, History, Biology, Geology, or a related field.
• Equivalent experience may also be considered, particularly in fields related to interpretation, education, natural resource management, or environmental sciences. 

2. Experience 

• Minimum 2 years’ experience in interpretation or outdoor education, which could include leading interpretive programs, guided tours, or outdoor education activities.
• Experience working with a variety of audiences, including school groups, families, and the general public.
• Prior experience in customer service or public-facing roles engaging with visitors and answering questions.
• Experience with outdoor activities such as hiking, rock climbing, or wilderness programs is also desirable. 

3. Knowledge 

• Working knowledge of the natural and cultural resources of Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area or comparable desert ecosystems, including geology, ecology, flora, fauna, and human history.
• Understanding of conservation challenges, sustainability practices, and Leave No Trace principles as they relate to public land management and visitor use.
• Knowledge of outdoor and environmental education principles, with the ability to interpret and communicate complex natural and cultural concepts in clear, engaging, and accessible ways for diverse audiences. 

4. Skills 

• Strong public speaking and communication skills, with the ability to confidently lead and deliver interpretive and educational programs for diverse audiences, including large and small groups.
• Demonstrated leadership skills for guiding hikes and facilitating programs, with the ability to manage group dynamics, prioritize visitor safety, and adapt to changing conditions.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and professionally with visitors, Bureau of Land Management staff, volunteers, and community partners.
• Strong organizational and time management skills to support the planning, coordination, and execution of interpretive programs, events, and educational activities.
• Effective written communication and creative skills for developing interpretive and educational materials, including brochures, signage, reports, and digital content.
• Proficiency in basic computer applications, including Microsoft Word and Excel, with the ability to efficiently manage documents, schedules, data tracking, and reports.
• Experience using content management systems such as WordPress and familiarity with reservation, scheduling, and visitor management systems, with the ability to learn new platforms as needed. 

5. Certifications 

• Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification from the National Association for Interpretation (NAI) (or willingness to obtain).
• First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).  

6. Other Qualifications 

• Passion for interpretation and outdoor education with the ability to foster a deep connection to the land among visitors.
• Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment, including hiking, standing for long periods, and carrying equipment.
• A team player with the ability to collaborate with the BLM staff, volunteers, and external partners to develop and deliver interpretive programs.

• Ability to pass a federal background check
• A valid driver’s license to get to trailheads and areas of interest at the conservation area, as well as off-site programs and outreach programs.
• Proficiency in using Microsoft Office suite, digital tools, educational software, and multimedia to enhance educational experiences. 

Schedule  

Full time, 40 hours per week. The duty station is Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area, with occasional travel to local schools and community events.  Schedule may include at least one weekend day.
