Summary
This internship prepares college students to enter the field of environmental or museum education by providing hands-on experience with interpretation, informal education, classes, and demonstrations in a public garden setting. In particular, the intern in this position will immerse themselves in our Butterfly House and Learning Apiary, taking care of live specimens, interacting with visitors, and providing informal education to the public. This internship allows students to learn how the Education Department leverages the incredible resource that is our landscape and gardens in a wide variety of learning modes and settings to serve our diverse customer and visitor base.
Primary Functions:
Learn the art and science of live interpretation in a public garden setting.
Build proficiency in educating on botany, environmental science, and horticulture topics.
Provide live interpretation to guests at our Native Moth & Butterfly House, Discovery Carts, and Learning Apiary.
Work closely with volunteers and trained docents.
Support Entomologist and Educator in care of live insects in Native Moth & Butterfly House and Learning Apiary, including things such as caterpillar rearing, beehive monitoring and garden maintenance.
Interact with students and visitors by providing informal educational experiences in both structured and unstructured settings.
Support our Adult Education programming by assisting with course registration, online moderation, in-person class management, and evaluations of our programs.
Learn and deliver best practices in guest experience.
