Summary
Virtual Student Federal Service (VSFS) is a nine-month remote internship open to U.S. citizens who are high school graduates enrolled in higher education at the time of their application and participation. Participants can be half-time or full-time undergraduate, graduate or postgraduate students. Because the program is virtual, students can complete the internship from anywhere.
The time commitment is about 10 hours per week during the school year. Internships are unpaid but may be eligible for course credit.
Students apply between July 1-28 on OpenOpps.USAJobs.gov/community/vsfs. Selections are made in August. Internships start in September.
The selected intern will research and create interpretation and educational material and content to be used in the Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) virtual Junior Ranger Missions.
Virtual Junior Ranger Missions are a relatively new initiative within the BLM's education and engagement program. It utilizes an educational game app to deliver Junior Ranger programs and engage learners with public lands from their mobile device.
The internship will involve researching and developing the content for the educational app, however, only a basic understanding of computers is needed. What is more important is a background and knowledge of education and interpretation program and curriculum design. In addition, the ability to research and understand information related to natural, cultural, and paleontological resources and deliver it to a variety of learners is needed.
