SEASONAL POSITION ONLY. MUST BE AVAILABLE FROM January 16 to May 5, 2023.

Under the direction of Outdoor School Program Coordinator and Assistant Coordinator, the head cabin leader is responsible for ensuring the safety and well being of students assigned to cabins.  Head Cabin leaders work directly with high school counselors to establish a collegial, safe atmosphere for sixth and eighth  grade students in cabins and on camp grounds.

Program Description

The Conejo Valley Unified School District Outdoor School is a residential program for 6th and 8th grade students. The program is held at Camp Ramah in Ojai, CA, a 400-acre camp located a few minutes from downtown Ojai, California. The Outdoor School program runs from January 16 to May 5, 2023 which includes a paid training and preparation week and the day after program conclusion. Room and board are included for Outdoor School staff. Weekend housing is available. Meals are available when camp is in operation. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Under general direction, provide guidance and assistance to high school counselors and students.
  • Maintain a supportive and collaborative work environment with fellow naturalists, cabin leaders, Camp Ramah support staff and outdoor school coordinator and assistant coordinator.
  • Assist with program preparation.
  • Assist with the implementation of program activities.
  • Participate in campfire activities including, but not limited to, age appropriate sing-a-longs, storytelling and skit performances.
  • Monitor student use of facilities to ensure proper care.
  • Assist with the maintenance of program equipment and supplies.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, self-motivation, positive high-energy and commitment.
  • Ensure students maintain a safe, clean living environment in cabins.
  • Help students resolve minor conflicts and issues.
  • Oversee high school students charged with the supervision of students in cabin living quarters and provide guidance to help them resolve minor student discipline issues.
  • Provide supervision of high school counselors and students.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS:

LICENSES, CERTIFICATION & SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

REQUIRED:

  • Proof of valid driver's license
  • Ability to obtain California Department of Justice fingerprint clearance.
  • TB clearance.
  • Current First Aid and C.P.R. certification.
  • Must be available for the entire Conejo Valley USD Outdoor School Program duration, January 16 - May 5, 2023.

PREFERRED:

  • Education and/or training in one or more of the following fields: environmental science, biology, botany, astronomy, oceanography, hydrology, and/or outdoor recreation.
  • Previous experience working with school aged children in camp settings.
  • Wilderness First Responder Certification.
  • Ability to play a musical instrument/ sing or extensive storytelling experience.

Work Environment:

Employees in this environment will be required to work in an outdoor school setting consisting of cabin dwellings, large activity rooms, and hilly terrain.
